South India's Coastal Charm: A Tamil Nadu and Kerala Tour

Day 01: Arrive Chennai

Arrive Chennai at 03:10 hrs by Qatar Airways (Early morning of day 02), upon arrival drive to Covelong i.e. 50 Kms / 01 hrs drive. Upon arrival transfer to the hotel at Covelong.

Day 02: Chennai – Covelong
Chennai (Madras), the capital of the state of Tamil Nadu and the third largest city in India, making a visit to orient along until you reach Marina Beach Mylapore (city of the peacock) where you can visit the temple dedicated to Shiva Kapaleeshvarar . Continue inland for about 60 km in the direction of Kanchipuram the "city of 100 temples" and the capital of the Pallava kingdom (VII - IX century). You can visit the temples of Sri Ekambaranathar and Kailasanatha, dating from the seventh century, and both dedicated to Shiva. Overnight in Covelong.

 

Day 02: Covelong – Mahabalipuram – Pondicherry
Morning departure to Mahabalipuram and visit the monuments that date back to the period from VII IX Century., When the city (now village) was the main port on the coast of Coromandel. You can visit: the Shore Temple, where you can admire the gigantic bas-relief called the "Descent of the Ganges", the 5 Rathas, a complex of temples depicting animals carved into the rock, the frescoes of Huge, the "Penance of Arjuna ', a 'huge sculpture made of a rock wall. Continue to Pondicherry. Here we will visit the community of Sri Aurobindo, founded in 1926 by Sri Aurobindo and a French woman known as "The Mother". Inside you can visit their graves. It continues with a visit to the French School of the Far East''.

Day 03: Pondicherry - Chidambaram - Kumbhakonam - Tanjore (Thanjavur)
Out along the coast to Chidambaram (70 km) to visit the temple of Nataraja, dating from the late thirteenth century, also known as "dancing Shiva". Chidambaram left, after about 40 km, you will visit the temple of Gangaikonda Colapuram, dedicated to Shiva was built in 1012. Then continue to Kumbhakonam to visit some of the 5 temples (Chakkarapani, Kumbeshawara, Nageshwara, Ramaswami and Sarangapani) dedicated to Shiva and Vishnu and the temple of Airatesvara to Dharasuram, dating from the twelfth century. Late afternoon arrival in Tanjore.

Day 04: Tanjore (Thanjavur), Excursion to Sri Rangam and Trichy (Tiruchchirappali
In the morning we leave for a trip to Sri Rangam to visit the Sri Ranganathaswamy temple complex, dating back to Chola (XIII cent.). The temple stands on an island in the Cauvery River and is, perhaps, the largest temple in all of India. It 'decorated with sculptures and inside contains 108 smaller temples. We then proceed to Trichy to visit the "Rock Fort" temple built on a hill 83 m high. You can make an ascent (optional) of 435 steps to reach the top of the hill from where you can admire the view of the city and the Temple of Sri Rangam. Return to Tanjore and visit the temple of Brihadishwara, a true example of Chola architecture, dedicated to Shiva Nataraja (year 1000).

Day 05: Tanjore – Madurai
Departure to Madurai, the center of the state of Tamil Nadu. Situated in Madurai, one of the oldest cities of India, we will visit the most important temple of Sri Meenaskhi, built by King Tirumalai Nayak (1623-1655) and dedicated to the goddess Meenaskhi. Here you can see some "Gopuram" (pyramidal towers) up to 50 meters high, decorated with hundreds of sculptures of animals and mythical figures of Hindu symbolism. You will then visit the Tirumalai Nayak Palace, located near the temple of Sri Meenakshi, the Royal Palace (XVII cent.) Theppakulam of the temple, the temple of Tiruparankundram, about 8 km from the city, carved into the rock 350 meters high. In the evening, there is the procession of Brahmins in the temple of Sri Meenakshi.

Day 06: Madurai - Cape Comorin (Kanyakumari)
Morning departure to Cape Comorin, the southern tip of India where three seas meet: the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. This place is famous for its spectacular sunrises and sunsets. Particularly fascinating is the show that can be enjoyed in the days of full moon, when you see the moon rise from the Bay of Bengal and at the same time the sun set over the Arabian Sea. Arrival at Cape Comorin and hotel accommodation.

Day 07: Cape Comorin - Kovalam
At Cape Comorin you visit the temple of Kumari Amman dedicated to the goddess Devi, located on the shore of the sea, which attracts pilgrims from all over India, the Gandhi Memorial, constructed in such a way that on the day of the birth of Mahatma (the second of October), the sun's rays illuminate exactly where are his ashes, the Vivekananda Memorial, built in 1970 on two islands about 400 meters from the coast, dedicated to the famous philosopher Swami Vivekananda and the Lighthouse (lighthouse). Continue to Kovalam in the state of Kerala.

Day 08: Kovalam, Trivandrum Tour
Drive to Trivandrum, 45 km from Kovalam to visit the Palace Panda Nanabhapuram built in wood by the Maharaja of Travancore who resided here from 1550 to 1790. Back in the early afternoon to relax on the beach.

Day 09: Kovalam - Alleppey - navigation - Kumarakom (navigation)
Departure for Alleppey where we boarded on un'house-boat and making a cruise in the narrow channels called backwaters. The navigation allows to observe the village life, surrounded by palm trees and inhabited by fishermen, in a quiet and relaxing atmosphere. In the afternoon, arrival in Kumarakom where you can see up close the system of narrow canals, connected to each other that until recently formed the backbone of the transport system of Kerala. Overnight stay in hotel.

Day 10: Kumarakom - Cochin (Kochi)
Morning departure for Cochin. In the afternoon we visit the Mattancherry Palace, built by the Portuguese in the sixteenth century, where they were crowned the Raja, and then the streets of antique shops. In the evening attend the Kathakali dance and if possible at the ceremony of their makeup. It is over 400 years old dances performed by dancers who dance in the light of high brass lamps

Day 11: Cochin
Day dedicated to the navigation in the areas of Chinese fishermen. Then we will visit the church of San Francesco, founded in 1503 and probably the oldest in India, the Santa Cruz Basilica and the synagogue. Afternoon at leisure.

Day 12: Cochin - Out
Transfer to the airport for departure.
